Molecular Mechanisms of Fungal Pathogen-Host Interactions

host pathogen interaction schematic illustrationImResFun will study fungal infectious diseases caused by the most common human fungal pathogens, the opportunistic Candida species. The key objectives of ImResFun include

  • to understand how epithelia, immune cells and infected organs respond to invasion by Candida spp,
  • to decipher host-defense mechanisms mediating pathogen elimination, and
  • to identify genetic networks driving the dynamics of host-pathogen interactions.

To improve diagnosis and identify novel biomarkers of invasive fungal infections, ImResFun will focus on basic mechanisms of pathogenesis and host immunity. Importantly, ImResFun provides the framework to directly translate experimental results into clinical practice by identifying potential targets for antifungal drug discovery. The training and research program of ImResFun cover molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions using infection models, clinical samples from patients with age-related infections, chemical biology and antifungal target development, as well as bioinformatics and genome-wide data analysis.
